Jackson Pollock Full fathom five 1947 MUSEUM OF MODERN ART NEW YORK

Jackson Pollock 1912-1956
FULL FATHOM FIVE 1947, detail.
Oil on canvas with nails, tacks, buttons, key, coins, cigarettes, matches.
Gift of Peggy Guggenheim 1952
Full Fathom Five is one of the Pollock's first 'drip' work. The top layers of the painting consist of pured lines of black and silver house paint while a large part of the paint's crust was applied by brush and palette knife; the result of this action is a labyrinthine web that revals an instantaneous unity between multiple crisscrossing and planar forms with no contours. A wide assortment of detritus such cigarette butts, coins, key are enfolded by this paint, contributing to
the painting's dense surface and churning sensation. The title is a quotation from the Shakespeare's play THE TEMPEST,
wherein Ariel descibes a death by shipwreck:"...Full fathom five thy father lies / Of his bones are coral made / Those
are pearls that were his eyes...".

A couple of Himalayan anthropomorphic primitive terracotta (terra cotta) lamps.
Interesting couple of Himalayan anthropomorphic primitive terracotta (terra cotta) lamps.
