HIMALAYAN ARTS

THE CATALOGUES

A MASQUE DECOUVERT

REGARDS SUR L'ART PRIMITIF DE L'HIMALAYA

MARC PETIT 1995 STOCK/ALDINES

"Les formes ont plus mémoire que le hommes. Ce qui surgit là, dans tous ces visages silencieux, graves ou hilares, dessine le relief d'un continent submergé: la vieille Asie des chamanes et des cultes de possession.

Face aux formules codifiées des classicismes indien et tibétain, l'art primitif de l'Himalaya affirme sa singularité, sa puissance d'invention et son humour, sa poésie et sa force expressive. "

GetAttachment[1]

GetAttachment[1] (2)

Marc Petit is a collector of primitive arts for more than 30 years, this catalogue, in which was edited a wide selection of his masks collection, played in the mid of the 90's a pivotal role  to make known the primal arts of the people of Himalaya to a large number of tribal arts lovers.

The book was awarded with the  Grand Prix du Livre des Arts of the Société des Gens de Lettres.

Marc Petit donated in 2003  25 Nepalese masks of his collection  to the Musée du Quai Branly of Paris; five of these items are already exhibited in the permanent collections of the Museum in the Asian section.

Several of his  masks will be showcased in the exhibition: IN THE WHITE OF THE EYES, HIMALAYAN MASKS / DANS LE BLANC DES YEUX, MASQUES HIMALAYA , which will be held at the Museum du Quay Branly from 9 November 2010 to 30 January 2011.

SOAS

-The SOAS is a leader in the study of Asia, Africa and the Middle East, the library with its Archives and  Special Collections is the HEFCE-designated National Research Library for these regions of the world.

SOAS is in the process of putting his collections of rare manuscripts, books, photographs, audio and film material on-line, to be freely available for everyone.

THE FIRST COLLECTION PUT ON THE WEB IS THE ARCHIVE OF PROFESSOR CHRISTOPH VON FURER-HAIMENDORF.

This collection is widely recognised as the world's most comprehensive visual documentation of tribal cultures in South Asia and the Himalayas.

The SOAS archive of Professor Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf (1909-1995) includes photographs, cine film and written materials.

It reflects his fifty years of scholarship.

It is especially valuable because it documents these cultures before many changed rapidly with the advent of external civil administration after the mid-twentieth century.

In 1995, Nicholas Haimendorf donated his father's archive to SOAS, where it was deposited in the Special Collections department of the Library.

The photographic collection, comprises more than 21,000 images

Ethnic groups represented in the Fürer-Haimendorf archive:

ART OF THE HIMALAYAS

THE CATALOGUES

-ENIGMAS DE LA MONTANAS, MASCARAS TRIBALES DEL HIMALAYA.
ENIGMES DES MONTAGNES, MASQUES TRIBAUX DE L'HIMALAYA.

58

The late Gustavo Gili was a friend and a passionate collector of Himalayan masks of Barcelona, in this catalogue, curated by Francois Pannier was edited a part of his collection.

First to collect Himalan art Gustavo Gili put toghether an important and selected collection devoted to the traditional arts of Africa.

The passion for the masks of the Himalayas begun in Gustavo after to have bought his first piece, the mask n1 of the catalogue, a sort of Frankestein item displaying a lot of ancient restaurations.

This remarkable piece, was also edited in the 1989 pivotal catalogue curated by  Francois Pannier and Stephane Mangin:  Masques de l'Himalaya. Du primitif au classique (at that time the mask was in another private collection of Barcelona) and exhibited in the 1991 exhibition at Musee de la Castre of Cannes.

Enigmas de la Montanas is a catalogue that reflects the sophisticate taste of Gustavo, an important catalogue to understand the still 'hidden and unknown' arts of the Himalayas.

Interesting the list of recent catalogues edited on the matter, "Masques de l'Himalaya" under the direction of Mr  Francois Pannier,   "Nepal shamanisme et sculpture tribale" by Marc Petit and Christian Lequindre, "Himalayas Art and Shamans" Eric Chazot Liliane and Michel Durand Dessert, "Sculptures de bois au Nepal, buffons et protecteurs" B. Goy and Max Itzikovitz, the three catalogues of the Galerie le Toit du Monde of the 2007 devoted the the "Art chamanique népalais".

-Mauja is a Gurung village  of  Kaski District in the Gandaki Zone of northern-central Nepal, the photo was took by the photographer Tod Ragsdale in the early 70's.

According  Mr. Christian Lequindre opinion,  the Masta culte, linked to those kind of sort of  AXIS MUNDI  POLES , is sporadically spread till the western central region despite most of the scholar of the matter limite than to the Karnali area.

That's an evident example in Gurung village context, the pic was took in 1973/74.

As demonstrated by mr Christhian in his recent catalogue there are also wooden poles in the eastern area of Nepal, but refering  there to ancestors and funerary cult.

WESTERN NEPAL

THE ARCHETYPIC ICONOGRAPHY OF AN ARTISTIC LIVING TRADITION

Photo courtesy of Jean Claud Latombe http://ai.stanford.edu/~latombe/mountain/index.htm

"...La natura non contenuta dall'equilibrio del clima prolifica con ebbra esuberanza: l'uomo stesso è natura, una immobilità stupefatta lo cristalizza in una inerzia senza passato; ti muovi in un terreno vergine..." (GIUSEPPE TUCCI about the Humla region).

1A

(free and personal reinterpertation by Ethnoflorence of an original writing  of G.Tucci,  libera e personale  reinterpertazione il cui spunto è tratto da un testo originale di Giuseppe Tucci)

1C

1D

"Circa la credenza di alberi creduti maledetti Giuseppe Tucci sottolineva come Devozione non fosse probabilmente la parola più appropiata, per definire il sentimento che ispiravano nei viandanti,  perché era certamente più  la paura il sentimento che li portava  a dedicare una preghiera o ad annodare un brandello di stoffa sui rami di questi alberi trasformati così in muti e temuti simulacri." Free and personal reinterpertation by Ethnoflorence of an original writing  of G.Tucci,  libera e personale  reinterpertazione il cui spunto è tratto da un testo originale di Giuseppe Tucci)

16

--PREPARING FOR A CHAM DANCE IN KORZOK VILLAGE, TSOMORIRI

TEXT AND PICTURES COURTESY OF TRAVEL LUST WORDPRESS

http://ihavetravellust.wordpress.com

A high Lama visited the village of Korzok at Tsomoriri and they decided to perform a Cham dance only the day before. The Cham dance or Masked dance is only performed by the monks and suppose to give merits to the audience, the monks are dressed in beautifully made ornamental costumes and masks of animal deities.

I happened to intrude into the preparations for the cham dance while everyone else including some annoyingly irritating Indian photographers and some other rich European photographers with huge camera set-up waiting in the courtyard for the performance. The monks were kind enough to let me stay on and photograph them dressing up for the dance. The whole preparation was amazing, everyone calmly went about dressing up, the other monks and villagers helping out, dressing the monks in their beautifully intricate costumes.

The feeling I got from this event : well its more genuine and provincial, more real compared to the other large events that is happening in the other places.

THE TRADITIONAL DANCE OF THE TRIBAL RAUTE PEOPLE

The nomadic hunter and gathering Raute people struggle to survive, but fiercly protect their ancient lifestyle in the western forests of Nepal.

Kings of the Forest: The Cultural Resilience of Himalayan Hunter-Gathers , by Jana Fortier, University of Hawaii Press, 2009.

A hunter-gatherer society is one whose primary subsistence method involves the direct procurement of edible plants and animals from the wild, foraging and hunting without significant recourse to the domestication of either.

"There is no need for us to live like you."

The Raute people of the Karnali and Makahali regions of Western Nepal is a nomadic indigenous ethnic group, which population is estimated in around 650 persons, their language is classified as Tibeto-Burman, closely related to the one spoken by two related ethic groups, the Ban Raji and Raij , the closest documentated language to the Raute is probably the Chepang, spoken by this ethnic group of West-Central Nepal. Officially recongnized by the Nepalese Government, the Raute are known for their life-subsistence linked with the  hunting of  macaque, langur monkeys, bats, porcoupine, and the gathering of wild forest tubers, fruits, and greens. To obtain grain, iron and cloths they trade handmade typical wooden bowls and boxes to the local farmers. The Raute however don't sell other products of the forest, bushmeat or forest medicinal plants.

In the present  world  this last  primitive hunter-gatherer society  living in the monsoons rainforest of Western Nepal  struggles with the  deforestation and encroachment, language loss, political domination by surrounding communities.  The book explores how this ethnic group is tryong to maintain its traditional way of life .

-THE VILLAGE GODS OF SOUTH INDIA

THE MOST COMPLETE PAGE OF THE WEB DEVOTED TO THE GRAMA DEVATAS OF SOUTH INDIA, AND NOT ONLY.

A REPORT ABOUT THE UNIQUE FIELD DOCUMENTATIONS THAT  HARRY HOLTZMAN COLLECTED 50 YEARS AGO.

"The Grama Devatas represent still today an important key to understanding the basic model of thought of a  part of South Indian population, still living the village way of life. These particular forms of image and worship have further the extraordinary characteristic of representing the most ancient tradition of the earliest past brought into the present. From the religious art view point, the village shrines represent an outstanding expression of forms and sites unique to India. Mr Stephen Inglis in his writing "Night Riders: Massive Temple Figures of Rural Tamil Nadu", about the terracotta horses of South Indian Shrines wrote that "... technically they are the most ambitiuous achievements in clay found in India and by any survey probably the largest hollow clay images to be created anywhere."
