SOME CONSIDERATIONS AROUND THE SO CALLED NEPALESE MASKS

I have always pondered on the meaning

of

'Mask of Nepal ',

a difficult question to answer,

easier to say that these are masks

that

especially between 1980 and 2000,

transited through the Kathmandu market.

In this way a Nepalese mask was a mask sold or bought in Kathmandu.

What was really interesting, is that these masks, although in theory come from a precise and well

defined geographical area, were the silent witnesses of an extraordinary and unknown iconographic artistic repertoire.

The lack  of information, of an available comparison in catalogs or collections,  public or private,

made the appearance of these strange objects even more problematic.

Especially for the fact that each of these masks seemed to sum itself a mature iconographic style, almost always

original and quite different from  the other.

01.JPG

Primitive or classic these masks have

a similar, but always different style, that makes them unique.

In this way there is no collection that you can say the same to another, refelcting each of them

the personal search, and taste of the collector,

at the same time, such as individual bricks of a large wall,

each mask is important individually but especially if placed in correlation with the other.

I personally think that a serious, scientific and neutral study of these materials is no longer avoidable,

it would be of strategic importance especially to break the wall of ignorance that surrounds us.

The creation of an archive, modeled for example on that of Yale University for the african arts,

could be

a crucial first step in this direction.

The individual strategyes  of the past years hardly were useful to break the wall of isolation that still surrounds us.
