The double sided membrane drum Dhyangro is the peculiar, indispensable, and one  of the most important, pharaphernalia of the western nepal  shamans. More on http://ethnoflorence.skynetblogs.be/post/6909408/dhyangro...

"Jhakri uomini con le ali" Nepal 1971, text by Italo Bertolasi for the exhibition "Viaggi a Oriente"  http://www.italobertolasi.com/viaggioriente.htm , courtesy Italo  Bertolasi http://www.italobertolasi.com/index.html.

Himalayan funeral, River burial, Junbesi, Solu Khumbu, Nepal.

"... This is the Himal lowlands, only 14,000 foot peaks. That means no sky burials. The lehk (highlands) are mostly for grazing Dzomo, a yak / cow hybrid. Traditionally, the Sherpa cremate their dead. The deceased, on the right of the this picture, was not a community member. She arrived on her way to see a lama in a nearby village for healing. She died overnight. She had no money to pay for the firewood for a proper cremation so they bought her down the nearby river, tied her to a large stone and rolled her in. If we realized was going on, we would have bought the wood. we were observing (my wife is sitting and watching in the background of the photo) and were very suprised to see that the fire the village shaman built by the river was only for burning incense. As for the body, we returned to this spot a month later and there se was, perfectly preserved in the icy river..."   Interesting and rare shamanic quintuple bells in bronze,  four  shamans  in namaste posture are placed over of the little four bronze bells.

A piece with a similar iconography was edited in the feature : "Art and Shamanism in the Himalayas" http://www.tribalarts.com/feature/himalayas/index.html#23  ( by Eric Chazot and Jean-Pierre Girolami on Tribal Art V 1:1/ 2000) ,  for a comparation see http://www.tribalarts.com/feature/himalayas/23.html  and http://www.tribalarts.com/feature/himalayas/19.html  for an unique shamanic quintuple bells on wood.

For  a long time attribuited to the shamanic context, the tribal masks of the Nepalese Middle Hills are still today a really mystery, as for their effective context of use.

About a  "Shaman ritual at bad death"( Himalayas 26 February 1990 )f http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wr2959HS2mA .

This small mask from the minimal  character and style, but at the same time characterized from an extraordinary expressive force is not a facial artifact, but a small mask that came attacked to the neck or the chest. The ritual or quite shamanic  context of this small and unique mask cannot be excluded.

Also this anthropomorphic stick introduces problems of attribution as for its effective function and use. Examining the dark patina of the stick, mails low regarding the barycentre of the artifact one, was maybe used for being up and so to be visible also in the middle of a crowd to a moltitude of person. The back side of the primitive frontal face is empty, it could be a reliquary of an important ancestors, a powerfull object; the ritual, and maybe devotional, use, sights the characteristics of the artifact one is sure, that more strictly shamanic one does not give to exclude.

Your site is very good Hi - I just bought an old single sided chepang shaman's drum and was looking for more info on it (my drum is very much like yours)

- and found your very excellent site. I am the editor of a UK based magazine about shamanism called Sacred Hoop www.sacredhoop.org

and I also buy and sell ritual objects from Nepal, tibet and Siberia/Mongolia.

www.3worlds.co.uk

I am very pleased to find your site. If you would ever like to write for my magazine about Nepali shamanic objects and folk traditions I would be intrested to hear from you.

Thank you for the work you have done doing your site - I will link it on the Sacred Hoop Magazine links page because I like to be able to show people good sites with information on about shamanism and ritual objects.
