The term Ādivāsīs (in Devangari  आदिवासी), means  "original inhabitants" ,  and its used to recomprise the indigenous minority  of the Indian population . The Adivasi  are also called Atavika (forest dwellers), Vanvasis or Girijans (hill people).

These  Tribal groups,  known as the Tribal people are particularly numerous in some Indian states as well as Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Rajastan, Gujarat, Mahararashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengala  and in extreme northeastern states . The Adivasi tribes are officially recognized by the Indian governament as "Scheduled Tribes" in the Fifth Schedule of the  Indian Constitution .

The Adivasi  have their own tribal religions which are different than the Hinduism and  more close to Tantric Shaivism.
